As millions of Americans are waking up on Thanksgiving Day, tuning in to the Macy’s Day Parade and pre-heating the oven for the start of Thanksgiving Day dinner, over a thousand supporters will be lacing up their running shoes and heading over to Pensacola Beach for the fifth annual Pensacola Beach Turkey Trot 5K.
The 5K, which is growing in popularity and numbers every year, is held in loving memory of Sabine Mireille Laguna, co-founder of Premier Island Management Group. Laguna, a loving wife and mother of two, lost a two-year battle with brain cancer in 2014.
“We do this race in honor of Sabine Laguna, and all of those who are battling all types of cancer,” said event coordinator Jessica Carn. “On Thanksgiving Day this is a great reason to get active for a good cause.”
Proceeds from the Pensacola Beach Turkey Trot 5K are donated to Duke University’s Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, one of the best brain tumor research centers in the world. The Day begins with a 200-yard Turkey Dash for kids that has their own color t-shirt craft, followed by the officially timed 5k race, with a great after party featuring a light breakfast, beer, mimosas and race awards for first, second and third places in each age group. Santa Claus is also known to make an appearance at the Pensacola Beach Turkey Trot 5K. Participants are encouraged to dress in their best costumes.
“We want people to come out and enjoy themselves and be thankful for every day spent with your loved ones because you never know who can be affected next ,” said Carn. “So either come out to honor somebody or to support the cause.”
